Nepal A Beautiful Garden
Nepal is geographically, culturally and socially diverse country. We can see diversity in the people living in different parts of this country. The climatic condition of the country is very different in the Himalayan region, mountain region and Terai region.
People living in these parts of the country have their own costumes, language, religion, lifestyle and culture. It is very difficult to find any village executive or municipality where people of only one caste or religion lives. The most beautiful feature of our country is unity in diversity.
All three regions are interdependent on one another. The rivers flowing from the Himalayas reach the Terai that facilitates in the process of irrigation. This in turn helps in the agricultural production. The crops grown in the Terai region is transported and consumed by the people of the mountain and Himalayan region. It helps to run the factories and industries of Terai region.
We respect each other and live in harmony. This is the true spirit of social harmony that is embodied into each Nepali's mind. We have to create our own individuality and try to contribute as much as possible in the developmental work of our country. Our caste, religion, language can be different but united effort can push ys to development.
Nepal is a culturally rich country. There are various costumes, folk songs, music, dance, art and culture that belong to the people of different regions. People from Himalaya region to Terai region are not only different in their conducts but are also different in their physical and facial structure. They also speak different languages and follow different culture.
Nepal is similar to garden where different types of flowers are grown. The fragrance of these flowers enchants the whole garden making it beautiful and pleasant. In a similar manner the diversity of Nepalese people makes it a beautiful country where each community has something unique to give back to the nation. This essence of Nepal makes its people feel proud and happy.
Why is Nepal considered as a garden with different flowers?
“It isn't a nation earned by my little efforts and hardships, it rather is a common garden of 4 complexions and 36 ethnic groups”.
The above line was quoted by Great King Prithvi Narayan Shah, the founder of modern Nepal, mentioned in the book “Divyopadesh” which means “The Divine Suggestion”. It was more than 2 centuries ago that the King saw an urge to unite small town-sized kingdoms into a vast nation.
During his life span, King Prithvi Narayan Shah made a number of relations with powerful states (to avoid attacks from them while he was engaged in conquering other states), and imported modern firearms for an efficient battle. Gurkha army, also showed bravery against the states that were backed with troops and technology from East India Company. Conquering the states of Terai region was an added risk due to widespread malaria at that time. With these challenges, expansion of “Gorkha”, a small Himalayan state into Nepal, a vast Himalayan Nation was a risk most rulers feared to take at that time.
A country does not sustains only with the unification of lands; the people belonging to several geographical, ethnic and religious groups need to have a mutual feeling of friendship, brotherhood and patriotism. Prithvi Narayan Shah quoted the line in order to make the people realize this feeling that Nepal belongs to them, and they belong to Nepal.
After the king's demise, his descendants continued his principles to extend the area of Nepal to a boundary much larger than today's. Trust me, that wouldn't have been possible if the citizens lacked a feeling of unity in diversity.
History is a solid proof that there are several conquered territories that have ultimately collapsed. But this country remains intact for so long because of this feeling of a common family. Even if there are people from several ethnic, racial and religious backgrounds, social harmony has been a glue to hold them peacefully, and get renowned as Brave Gurkhas to the rest of the world.
