Airports

Details of new Pokhara International Airport

Location

The airport site is located on the hill area, 800m above mean sea level, at Chhinne Danda in the city of Pokhara, Kaski District, Gandaki zone, western Nepal.
Situated 3km east of Pokhara’s existing domestic airport, it is well connected to the Prithvi Highway (Kathmandu-Pokhara).

Need for the new airport in Pokhara

The new airport is intended to provide regional, domestic and international passengers with additional flight services over the current airport to encourage tourism in the Pokhara region, which is one of the popular tourist destinations in Nepal.
The current Pokhara International Airport has a short runway and is experiencing technical difficulties.

The conceptual masterplan of the new Pokhara airport is designed to the category 4D standard set by the ICAO, IATA and FAA.
A 2.5km-long and 45m-wide runway with a 330m runway strip is planned to be built at the proposed Pokhara airport to support take-off and landing operations of big commercial aircraft such as Airbus A320, Boeing 737-700 series, and Boeing 757-200.

A 1.2km x 23m parallel taxiway will be built from the runway central line on the north side.

Two aircraft parking aprons each measuring 300m in length and 100m in width will be built for parking of up to five domestic or international aircraft.

The airside infrastructure works will also include construction of two 182.5m-long and 23m-wide exit taxiways, access roads and aerodrome pavement.
Landside infrastructure will include the construction of 10,000² international terminal building, domestic terminal building with a floor area of 4,000m², and a 3,500m² customs and cargo building.

The airport will also feature 2,500m² air traffic control tower and operation building, two security buildings, a 6,000m² domestic and international hangar, a 200m² administration building, car parking areas, an air navigation unit, a fuel storage facility, water supply facilities, and other utilities.

Gautam Buddha International Airport

Location of Gautam Buddha International Airport
Gautam Buddha International Airport (GBA) and Lumbini are located Rupandehi District in the country’s western development region. GBA is located about 2 kms west from Siddhartha Nagar/Bhairahawa, the district headquarters and is is situated at an altitude of 109 meters above mean sea level. Lumbini is 20 km towards west from GBA, connected with an all weather road.

Components and Activities of the Project

Runway
The new runway will be of 3,000m x 45m toward 182.5m south from the centerline of the existing 1,500m x 30m runway in the same direction. Design life of the aerodrome is estimated for 10 years and design aircraft is Boeing 777-300 series or equivalent.

Runway Strip
The runway strip will be of 3,202m length with 300m width. Either ends of runway strip is taken as runway end safety area.

Taxiway
The existing runway will be converted into parallel taxiway, and the existing taxiway will be retained and linked to apron to parallel taxiway by widening its width from 15m to 18m with 3.5m paved shoulders on each side of the taxiway.

Apron
Apron Dimension
Apron Length -350m
Width -163 m

Aerodrome Pavement
Aerodrome pavement will be designed for Boeing 777-300 series or equivalent with design life of 10 years. The pavement will be flexible for runway, taxiway and some part of apron.

Terminal Building
The new terminal building at the west side of the existing terminal building will be constructed, which will have all required facilities based on future needs.

Nijgadh International Airport

Project Location
The proposed SIA area is in Kohalbi Municipality which was formed in 2016 in Bara District of Province 2, southern Nepal, while Nijgadh is the adjoining Municipality.

East-West Highway runs parallel to the project area in the north. Government has initiated construction of Kathmandu-Terai Fast Track-Express Highway as a prerequirement of the SIAP operation.

Runway and Taxiway
3.6 km long two parallel runways & 4 taxi ways

Passenger  terminals
720,000 square meter international terminal , capacity to handle 60 million passenger/yr – about 167,000 /day

Aircraft Stand : 174 aircrafts

Why it is necessary ?
International air connectivity to Nepal is confined only to the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu Valley of Nepal. It is very congested andthere is no space for its expansion due to haphazard urbanization and topographical limitations. A good moderate tourism growth would require Airport to handle 3-4 million passengers per year while TIA handles about 1.1-1.3 million passengers per year. Airspace management for take-off and landing planes has become a serious problem.

By 2021, Nepal’s annual international air traffic is expected to reach 20 million passengers, a figure too big for TIA to handle. Hence, Nepal has an urgent situation for the development of a world class airport to accommodate rapidly increasing air traffic demand. This project seeks an investor to take lead in the development of the SIA to international standards. This includes the development of airport city as well.

Development of the airport city will have the following features:
i) It will create a business and commercial zone
ii) It will grow as an industrial zone and a big dry port
iii) It will create a tourism and recreation zone
iv) It will develop a public green zone
v) It will be an ultimate response to the growing aviation traffic in the country.
vi) It is expected to provide direct long-haul connectivity to geographies such as North America, Europe, and Australia, enhancing Nepal’s tourism and trade opportunities.
vii) It will address decentralized development focus of federalism by enabling major infrastructure outside the capital city.

viii) It will develop Nepal not just as a destination but as a lucrative transit point between the east and the west.
